DadsStory: Halloween Spooky Treats

Submitted by:  Virginia Mesko

There are only a few times per year that we adults shower our kids with sugary goodness, and Halloween is one of those times.  Try out these spooky treats with your kids.

Marshmallow Mummies
Ingredients:
     1 bag regular size marshmallows
2 boxes “Rainbow Punch” flavored Fruit-by-the-Foot
     Popsicle sticks
     Black food coloring
Directions:
1.) Push one Popsicle stick through the sides of three marshmallows.
2.) Press and squeeze two lower ones to form a rough triangle.
3.) Before unrolling Fruit-by-the-Foot, cut the roll in half lengthwise.  Unroll and wrap up the marshmallows like a mummy, leaving a small open space for eyes.
4.) Make eyes by dotting with black food color on a toothpick.
5.)  When finished, they can be placed in a shallow baking pan or box, and then decorated with spider webs, plastic spider rings, etc…

Monster Munch Crunch
Ingredients:
     1 box (7 ounce) caramel popcorn-nut mixture
     2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips
     ½ cup candy corn
     ½ cup Reese’s Pieces candies
1 cup Halloween gummy candies (worms, spiders, and such)
Directions:
1.) Spread popcorn mix on a baking sheet.
2.)  Melt chocolate; spoon into a small zip-top bag. Snip a very, very small tip off one corner of the bag and drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn.
     3.) Refrigerate to set.
4.)  Mix popcorn mixture with remaining ingredients.  Serve in paper cups.

Slobber Gobs
Gather the kiddos and spread some newspaper on the table.  Slobber Gobs are supposed to look like “mouths.”  For especially small children, you might want to cut up the apples yourself and put them on a plate for them to assemble.  This recipe is for eating now so the apples don’t have a chance to turn dark.
Ingredients:
     1 apple for each child
2 tablespoons peanut butter or marshmallow crème
1/3 cup candy corn, broken pretzels, raisins, corn nuts, peanuts, and/or miniature semisweet chocolate pieces
Directions:
1.) Use an apple slicer to cut the apples into slices.  Then spread peanut butter or marshmallow crème on one of the cut sides of four apple slices.
2.)  Arrange the candy corn, pretzels, raisins, corn nuts, peanuts, and /or chocolate pieces on the peanut butter to look like teeth.
3.)  Top each with another apple slice.
Makes 4 snacks.
