The overall divorce rate in the United States has been on a steady decline since the 1980s. However, the number of couples older than 50 deciding to terminate their marriage has exploded over the last 25 years.
Since 1990, the divorce rate for Americans older than 50 has doubled and nearly tripled for those older than 65.
Stephanie Coontz, professor of family studies at Evergreen State College, recently joined DadsDivorce Live to discuss some of the possibles reason for the rise of so-called “gray divorce” and explain the complications that arise when older couples break up.
