Question:
My wife and I are getting divorced and her parents are threatening to bill me for the wedding costs they incurred.
Do I have any legal obligation to pay back the cost of our wedding to my in-laws?
Answer:
I am unable to give you legal advice on divorce. I can give general divorce help for men, though, my knowledge is based on Missouri divorce laws where I am licensed to practice.
It seems highly unlikely that the court would require you to reimburse your in-laws for the cost of your wedding if you get divorced. The court would likely look at the payment of the wedding as a gift to the marriage and not something that requires reimbursement.
However, you could be bound under contract law if you signed a promissory note or any other contract stating you would pay for the wedding if you divorced. Thus, unless you signed a contract stating you would pay, a court likely will not require you to reimburse your in-laws.
